PC Apex Poll

Since the Phenom will run on AM2 will you (or do you) use an AM2 setup?
I already am on AM2 and plan to stay.
I was already planning to move to AM2.
I am moving to AM2 because it will support the Phenom.
I am waiting till the Phenom is out for a while but will consider it.
I am an AMD Fanboy.
I am an Intel Fanboy.
I am not considering an AM2 setup at all.
I don't care as long as I can get my email.
Phenom-what? AM2 who?! Speak english man!

Logisys has been cranking out new products for our computers on a regular basis and have garnered a reputation of knowing what modder's like. All you need to do is check out their modding lizard logo to see where their target market is. One of their latest products they've sent for review is a dual cold cathode 120mm case fan. As usual, LogiSys has another product with reasonable performance at a great price.

Package & Unit

The Logisys Double CCFL 120mm fan arrived in a hanging clamshell package. There isn't a whole lot of info on the package and has the usual few words that didn't quite make it through the translator properly.

Included with the fan is an inverter, a PCI slot cover with the on/off switch for the light, four fan screws, some adhesive Velcro, and a screw to secure the PCI slot cover. There are no instructions inside or printed on the package exterior, but if you need instructions to install one of these then it's time put the computer on eBay.

Logisys uses a clear fan chassis with a concave bolt-on adapter that contains a center cold cathode and another that runs around the outside. If you use this setup, you will want to ensure that you have plenty of clearance since the whole apparatus is 41.27mm thick (about 1 and 5/8th inch). That's pretty thick and may not fit between the drive cage and front bezel on some cases. The nice thing about it being removable is that you can switch the lights around so that you can use it as an intake or exhaust fan while keeping the lights shining towards the inside of the case. Hell, if you wanted you could even switch it to another fan with better specs.

Install

To hook up the fan and lights, there are a few wires you have to deal with. First is the power to the fan itself. You have an option of running it off a 4 pin Molex or using the 3 pin connector that allows for RPM monitoring. The lights have two different connectors, one Red and one White. These are plugged into the inverter where guess what? One female connector is Red and one is White. The power to the inverter is provided by a normal pass-through 4 pin Molex.

Specs

The airflow may not seem to be that high, but let me say that this fan is quiet... dead silent. When it was running I couldn't detect any noise at all. Although I wouldn't want to use this fan as a sole source of cooling, it will not adding a few of these won't add any more noise to your case. The use of a sleeve bearing instead of ball is unfortunate, but again the lights can be moved to a different fan if necessary.

Here are the specs on what you get:

Lights:

- Input Voltage: 12V
- Output Voltage: 650V+- 10%
- Current: 5.0mA+-0.5mA
- Brightness: 28,000 cd/m<2>
- Life Span: Min. 15,000 Hours

Fan:

- Fan Dimension: 120*120*25mm
- Input Voltage: 11.2~12.2VDC
- Output Current: 5~7.5mA
- Output Frequency: 40kHz+-20%
- Air Flow: 42.31CFM
- Rotation Speed: 2800~3200RPM
- Noise Level: 22dB(A)
- Bearing Type: sleeve

Lit Up

How does it look? Judge for yourself. The pair of cold cathode lights definitely increases the light output compared to a single cold cathode fan. The Logisys fan can light up most of your case innards instead of just an area inside your case. These photo's really don't do it justice, the color stays a true Blue and the light emitted is very bright. Although Blue is the only color they offer on their website, but looking at the package they plan on having the light in Red, Green, RGB, and UV and the fan chassis in UV Blue, UV Green, UV Red or clear like this one.

Conclusion

The Logisys CCFL 120mm fan is a good product that does what it is designed for quite well at a low price. It isn't going to produce a wind tunnel in your case, but it will light it up brightly. As is, 42 CFM is nothing to sneeze at. The fan is completely silent and the performance is OK. Due to these qualities, I award the LogiSys Double CCFL 120mm Fan a 7.5 out of 10 and the PimpRig Approved award. If the performance of the fan was better it would have garnered a higher score. The LogiSys Double CCFL 120mm fan can be found at online merchants for around $10 - $15 USD.

Pro
- Clear fan and grill
- Totally silent fan
- CC grill is transplantable
- Reasonable price

Con
- CFM is moderate for a 120mm fan

PimpRig Rating //
(7.5 pimp hats out of 10)

Thanks go out to LogiSys for providing this product for review.
