When it comes to troubleshooting hardware inside your computer, any enthusiast can tell you that any particular problem can be caused by one or more components going/gone bad. Narrowing any problem down can be quite challenging if you do not have extra components lying around to swap in for the suspected bad component(s). Any help one can get in troubleshooting components is more than welcome in my eyes.
FrozenCPU, one of the largest and most well known companies that cater to computer modders and enthusiasts, has their own brand of ATX 2.0 power supply tester available that they have sent to PimpRig for review and should at the very least be welcome if/when it ever comes time to rule out your power supply as the cause of your computer's woes.
Package
Once again I have been lucky with the delivery gods and I think I am going to stop mentioning this from here on out as I don't want to jinx myself for the future. The United States Postal Service took care of this package rather well on this occasion as can be seen in the below picture.
Inside the outer box, the inner box was packed with those large rectangular bubble wrap pieces and allowed for little if any shifting within the outer box. Below you can see what the inner box looks like. Nothing special, but it is a small box and it does include the features on the back of the box.
There was no included manual for how to use the tester, but the instructions are printed on the front of the tester itself. Being that the testing is pretty straightforward, these instructions are more than adequate.
The Tester
Taking the tester out of the box you can see the instructions printed on the front of the tester.
Shown below are the various testing ports available on the power supply tester. 24-20 pin ATX and molex connectors.
P4(P6/P8) and floppy connectors, SATA connector
Specs
Here are the features according to FrozenCPU's website.
The FrozenCPU Power Supply Tester displays the condition of your power supply. Simply plug the tester into your power supply's 24 pin molex connector and the built in LEDs will give a basic diagnostic of your power supply. If all of the green LED's light up and it beeps, then the power is OK. If a LED doesn't light up, then there is a malfunction in the power supply and it is highly recommended to stop use of it.
This Power Supply Tester can test 20-pin power supplies - please see photo on right demonstrating this ability.
Note: Newer 24-pin power supplies often do not supply the -5V line anymore since it is no longer needed by modern motherboards. If your power supply tester's -5V LED doesn't light up with a 24-pin power supply, it is not an error. The power supply is functioning properly.
