Since the Phenom will run on AM2 will you (or do you) use an AM2 setup?
I already am on AM2 and plan to stay.

Intro

SilenX is not a name we see kicked around on PimpRig very often, even though they have been making PSU's, fans and heatsinks for many years now, and to the best of my knowledge we have never reviewed any of their products here. Well, that's about to change. Thanks to the people at 3DCool.com we will be reviewing the SilenX Ixtrema 120mm Copper CPU Cooler.

Package and Cooler

Inside the box from 3DCool was the typical blister pack containing the copper cooler along with a fan controller, mounting hardware for various configurations and a small pack of thermal compound. The cooler itself is very similar in appearance to the Zalman CNPS7700. It's roughly the same size and shape as the 7700. There is one difference that sets this cooler apart from the Zalman. The fins are crimped to give them an appearance similar to Ruffles potato chips. These crimps are in place to help increase the amount of surface area for the fins. It is made completely of copper with the exception of two aluminum blocks used to hold the whole thing together and which have no bearing on its cooling abilities as far as I could tell. It weighs in at 785 grams or 1.73 pounds and measures 140mm across. As the name implies, it sports a 120mm fan which can be controlled with the included speed controller.

I was a bit disappointed with the construction of this cooler. When looking at the base it is easy to see the individual pieces of copper that were sandwiched together to form the base and then spread out to form the fins. While it felt smooth to the touch the finish was not very good. The Zalman's copper base is done the same way, by sandwiching all the fins tightly together to make it appear as a single piece of metal, but the SilenX's base isn't executed as nicely. The spacing of the fins was uneven and made for a lack of uniform appearance. The SilenX does have one advantage over the Zalman... it fits socket A motherboards.
